3. FAQs – Kentucky Counselor and Therapist Licensure Renewal and CEs

Q: What are the renewal deadlines for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs), and Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in Kentucky?

A: In Kentucky, both Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs), and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) are required to renew their licenses every two years (biennially).

The specific renewal date is based on the licensure anniversary, and failing to renew on time may result in penalties or license suspension. It is crucial to complete all continuing education requirements before the renewal deadline and submit the renewal application and fees to avoid interruptions in practice. You can check your specific renewal date through your professional licensing board’s portal.

Q: What happens if I don’t complete the required Continuing Education (CE) hours before my licensure renewal deadline?

A: If you fail to complete the required Continuing Education (CE) hours before your licensure renewal deadline, you risk penalties, including late fees and potential license suspension or revocation. Kentucky’s licensing boards conduct random audits, and if you are found non-compliant with CE requirements, you may be subject to disciplinary action.

However, in some cases, the board may allow you to complete additional CE hours after the deadline if you are late, but this often comes with penalties. It’s essential to keep track of your CE credits and complete them well before your renewal date to avoid complications.

Q: Can I carry over excess CE hours from one renewal period to the next?

A: Yes, Kentucky allows for the carryover of excess CE hours to the next renewal period. Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs and LPCCs) can carry over up to 10 hours of CE credits, while Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) can carry over up to 15 hours to the following renewal cycle.

However, these credits cannot be used retroactively to fulfill the requirements of the current period, and you must still meet the mandatory training requirements for ethics and Kentucky law in each renewal cycle. Carrying over excess credits is an excellent way to stay ahead and avoid last-minute rushes to meet CE requirements.
