Course Description: This training provides mental health providers with an in-depth understanding of Postpartum Depression (PPD) and Postpartum Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (pOCD), two perinatal conditions that are frequently underdiagnosed and misinterpreted in clinical practice. The session emphasizes differential diagnosis, culturally responsive assessment, and trauma-informed interventions to support postpartum clients, particularly Black mothers who experience heightened systemic barriers. Providers will gain practical, evidence-based tools to enhance accuracy in screening, clinical formulation, and therapeutic response.
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate clinical features of Postpartum Depression and Postpartum OCD using DSM-5-TR criteria, common symptom presentations, and validated screening tools relevant to clinical practice.
- Implement culturally responsive and trauma-informed assessment strategies to accurately evaluate risk, intrusive thoughts, compulsions, mood disturbances, and safety concerns among postpartum clients.
- Apply at least two evidence-based therapeutic interventions—such as CBT-OCD exposure strategies, behavioral activation, cognitive restructuring, or safety planning—to effectively treat clients experiencing PPD or pOCD.
