Course Description: This session explores the role of healthcare workers and leaders in trauma-informed care. Specifically, participants will learn how they can build awareness and provide effective and meaningful education to team members on this important, yet sensitive topic. Participants will learn about critical elements of screening and assessing for trauma, care planning in a trauma-informed way, and how care partners can assist with daily care in a trauma-informed way. Current research shows that healthcare professionals are leaving the industry primarily due to burnout and stress. We all play a role in supporting our teams, ourselves, and our peers. In this session, participants will learn about trauma-informed leadership principles, psychometric measures to assess burnout and trauma, and measures to facilitate individual “self-plans” to support each other’s mental health.
Learning Objectives:
- Enumerate methods for integrating trauma-informed care into policies, procedures, and daily practices.
- Identify best practices for providing education on understanding different types of trauma, the effects of trauma on individuals, how to recognize symptoms, and ways to communicate and deliver care in a trauma-informed manner.
- Describe techniques staff can utilize to address trauma and secondary trauma in peers and apply them to case examples.
