2) Utah Counselor and Therapist Continuing Education Requirements

In Utah, counselors and therapists are required to complete continuing education (CE) to maintain their licenses and ensure they stay current with industry standards and best practices. The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) oversees these requirements, which differ slightly based on the specific license held by the practitioner.

Below is a detailed breakdown of the CE requirements for Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LCMHCs), Licensed Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselors (ACMHCs), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs), and Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (LAMFTs).

General Continuing Education Requirements

The continuing education requirements are designed to ensure that licensed counselors and therapists stay informed about the latest developments in mental health treatment and ethical practices. CE credits can be earned through various approved activities, including workshops, conferences, online courses, seminars, and other educational events that are related to the mental health profession.

1. Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LCMHC) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT)

CE Hours: 40 hours of continuing education must be completed every two years.
Ethics/Law Requirement: At least 6 of the 40 required hours must be focused on ethics or legal issues relevant to clinical practice.
Supervision and Training: A portion of the CE hours can be fulfilled through supervision or consultation activities, as long as these activities meet the specific educational criteria set by DOPL.

2. Licensed Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselors (ACMHC) and Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (LAMFT)

CE Hours: 20 hours of continuing education are required every two years.
Ethics/Law Requirement: Similar to fully licensed professionals, at least 6 of the 20 CE hours must cover ethics or legal topics.
Supervision and Training: Supervised activities can count toward the total CE requirement, provided they adhere to the standards set by the licensure board.

Accepted Forms of Continuing Education

The following are examples of CE activities typically accepted by the Utah DOPL for counselors and therapists:

Workshops, Seminars, and Conferences: Attending or presenting at professional events related to mental health counseling or marriage and family therapy.
Online Courses or Webinars: Approved online courses that are directly related to clinical practice, ethics, or mental health treatment techniques like Agents of Change Continuing Education.
Academic Courses: Completing coursework from accredited universities or institutions that focus on mental health counseling, psychology, or family therapy.
Publishing: Publishing articles, research, or books relevant to counseling or therapy practice may count towards CE hours.
Supervision: Participating in supervision as a supervisor or supervisee, if the supervision relates to clinical practice development.

Approved Providers

To ensure CE credits are valid, licensees must obtain them from approved providers. DOPL-approved providers typically include:

National and regional professional organizations, such as the American Counseling Association (ACA) or the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).
Accredited universities or colleges.
Continuing education programs accredited by professional boards, including the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) or the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB).

Documentation and Audits

Licensees are responsible for maintaining accurate records of their CE activities. Documentation should include:

Certificates of completion from the CE provider.
Course descriptions or syllabi, if requested by DOPL.
Records of attendance at seminars, workshops, or conferences.

DOPL may conduct random audits to ensure compliance with CE requirements. If audited, professionals must submit their documentation to verify that they have completed the required CE hours.

Additional CE Guidelines

Excess Hours: If a licensee completes more than the required CE hours during the renewal period, the excess hours cannot be carried over to the next renewal period.
Inactive License: If a license is placed on inactive status, CE hours do not need to be completed during that period. However, the licensee must meet the CE requirements if they wish to reactivate the license.

By staying up to date with these CE requirements, counselors and therapists in Utah ensure that they continue to provide high-quality services to their clients while remaining compliant with state licensure regulations.

3. FAQs – Utah Counselor and Therapist Licensure Renewal and CEs

Q: What types of continuing education (CE) activities are accepted for license renewal in Utah?

A: Utah accepts a variety of CE activities for counselors and therapists, as long as they are related to the professional practice of mental health.

Acceptable activities include attending workshops, conferences, seminars, or webinars, as well as completing accredited online courses that cover clinical skills, ethics, or legal issues.

Additional options include academic coursework from accredited institutions, publishing articles or research in professional journals, and engaging in supervised clinical activities or consultations. It’s important to ensure that the CE activities are provided by DOPL-approved organizations, such as the American Counseling Association (ACA), the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), or accredited universities.

Q: What are the consequences of failing to meet continuing education (CE) requirements by the renewal deadline?

A: If a counselor or therapist in Utah does not complete the required CE hours before the license renewal deadline, the license will lapse, and the practitioner will not be legally allowed to provide counseling or therapy services until the license is renewed.

This can have serious implications for both the counselor’s practice and clients. Additionally, if the license lapses, professionals may be required to pay reinstatement fees and complete additional steps before returning to active status. In some cases, failing to meet CE requirements may lead to disciplinary action from DOPL. To avoid these penalties, it’s important to track and complete your CE requirements well before the renewal date.

Q: How do I find approved CE providers and ensure my courses count toward my licensure renewal?

A: To ensure that your continuing education courses count toward license renewal, it’s critical to select courses from approved providers. Utah DOPL typically approves CE activities from nationally recognized professional organizations such as the American Counseling Association (ACA), American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).

You can also choose academic courses from accredited universities or professional workshops and conferences that focus on mental health counseling, therapy practices, or related legal and ethical topics. Before registering for any CE course, confirm that the provider is recognized by DOPL or a national accrediting body. Always retain records of CE activities, as you may need to provide documentation in the event of an audit by DOPL.
