Course Description: This training explores the emotional and professional transitions clinicians often face when leaving agency work, including the hidden grief, identity shifts, and trauma bonds that can develop in high-stress environments. Participants will examine how to honor past workplace relationships while releasing guilt, strengthening boundaries, and navigating compassion fatigue. Emphasis will be placed on developing sustainable support networks and fostering a grounded sense of professional identity in private practice or other next steps.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify emotional and relational dynamics, including trauma bonding and grief, that may surface during the transition from agency work to private practice.
  2. Describe ethical considerations related to boundaries, client transitions, and ongoing relationships with former coworkers or supervisors.
  3. Apply reflective and self-compassionate tools to address guilt, loss, and imposter syndrome during the transition.

Instructor Bio(s):

Jen Rivera, LCSW

Jen Rivera is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 15 years of experience in child welfare and specialized training in Perinatal Mood Disorders and Perinatal Psychotherapy. As a mother of two and an Army wife, she brings both professional expertise and personal understanding to her work supporting parents through challenging transitions.

After her youngest spent time in the NICU, Jen experienced postpartum anxiety firsthand, gaining a deeper appreciation for the emotional complexities faced by NICU parents. Today, she is passionate about educating clinicians and providers on accurately screening for and supporting parents experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), bridging the gap between clinical knowledge and lived experience to ensure no parent feels unseen or unsupported.
