Course Description: Medical social workers play a critical role in helping patients and families navigate the emotional, social, practical, and ethical challenges that arise within healthcare settings. Unlike outpatient therapy, medical social work often requires rapid assessment, immediate intervention, and close coordination with interdisciplinary teams, all within the constraints of a fast-paced medical environment.
In this one-hour live continuing education course, participants will explore the responsibilities of social workers across hospital and healthcare settings, including brief psychosocial assessment, crisis intervention, child abuse and neglect assessment and reporting, discharge planning, documentation, and community resource coordination. The course will examine how medical social workers balance patient needs, organizational expectations, legal requirements, and ethical responsibilities while collaborating with physicians, nurses, case managers, and other professionals. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of the medical social work role and practical strategies for delivering effective, patient-centered care across the continuum.
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate the role, scope, and responsibilities of medical social workers from those of outpatient therapists.
- Apply brief psychosocial assessment and crisis-intervention strategies to identify patient and family needs within time-sensitive healthcare settings.
- Develop an interdisciplinary plan that addresses mandated reporting, discharge needs, documentation, ethical concerns, and coordination with community resources.
