  • Session 2 – Saturday, 10/19/24 (10am – 1pm EST)

Learning Method:  Synchronous distance (interactive). Attendees will also get access to a recorded video and the presented resources.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Develop and implement comprehensive ethical strategies for working with children and adolescents, focusing on confidentiality, informed consent, and effective rapport-building to promote a supportive therapeutic relationship and address potential ruptures.
  2. Critically assess and respond to the needs of child and adolescent clients requiring higher levels of care, employing evidence-based tools for accurate assessment and creating seamless referral plans for intensive interventions.

Instructor Bio(s):

Meagan Mitchell is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has been providing individualized and group instruction for over 8 years.

Meagan Mitchell, LICSW, is currently a Child and Adolescent Therapist and owner of Brain Space Wellness. She is working towards her Play Therapy credential. Meagan is also the founder of Agents of Change Social Work Test Prep – a learning platform and community designed for social workers preparing for their licensing exams.

She loves combining her passion for learning and sharing her knowledge with the social work community. Meagan has a strong interest in tech & and innovation, specifically exploring the intersection of technology with social work practices. She is also passionate about multicultural supervision & and ethics; ensuring diverse voices are heard, understood, and supported in supervision and consultation.

Lastly, Meagan is currently a DSW student at SUNY Buffalo.

Ernesto Bejarano – The Social Work AI Mentor

Ernesto Bejarano is a trailblazer in integrating artificial intelligence with social work, revolutionizing the field. As the founder of Social Work AI Magic, Ernesto leverages AI to empower social workers, therapists, counselors, and other professionals in human services to streamline their work, offering tools that provide guidance, templates, research, and analysis. 

In addition to his pioneering work with Social Work AI Magic, Ernesto is a certified career and personal development coach. He specializes in helping clients, particularly those in human services, to identify their goals, overcome barriers, and devise actionable plans to achieve their desired outcomes. His expertise extends to group facilitation in areas such as parenting, domestic violence, and youth counseling.

Ernesto’s dedication to education and community service is exemplified by his role as a governing board member of the Alum Rock School District in San Jose, California, where he served from 2018 to 2024. In this capacity, he contributed to leadership development and job coaching, supporting the district’s mission to provide quality education and resources. His extensive experience as a social work supervisor, where he has been instrumental in guiding and developing staff and improving casework practices, further underscores his commitment to the social work profession.

Rachel Yutzy, LCSW

Rachel Yutzy is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Grief & Trauma Psychotherapist with experience in treating a wide range of mental health issues, including trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. She has worked with children, adolescents, and adults, utilizing evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

In her current role at Alvord Baker & Associates, she specializes in treating complex developmental and sexual trauma, alongside providing therapy for individuals struggling with grief, loss, and dissociative disorders. In addition to her clinical work, Yutzy is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Clinical Social Work at NYU.

Yutzy has held several positions in the Washington, D.C. area, most notably at the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing, where she has been a Grief & Trauma Psychotherapist since 2017. There, she provides therapy for individuals who have experienced significant trauma, focusing on childhood sexual abuse, dissociative disorders, and traumatic grief. 

Earlier in her career, Yutzy gained experience in clinical case management and trauma therapy through roles at Catholic Charities and the Joseph J. Peters Institute. She provided in-home crisis intervention services to families dealing with homelessness and delivered trauma-focused therapy to survivors of sexual trauma.  Her commitment to trauma-informed care and clinical education has been a hallmark of her career trajectory.

Ethical Considerations with Kids and Teens

1) Confidentiality and Consent

  • Implement best practices for obtaining informed consent and maintaining confidentiality when working with children and adolescents, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Navigate complex situations involving parental consent and minor assent, effectively balancing the need for transparency with the protection of the young client’s privacy rights.

2) Building Rapport and Repairing Ruptures

  • Develop and practice techniques to establish and strengthen trust and rapport with child and adolescent clients, facilitating a supportive therapeutic relationship.
  • Learn and apply effective strategies for identifying, addressing, and repairing ruptures in the therapeutic alliance, promoting resilience and continued engagement in therapy.

3) Assessing for Higher Levels of Care

  • Develop skills to accurately assess the need for higher levels of care in children and adolescents, utilizing evidence-based screening tools and assessment protocols.
  • Learn to create and implement appropriate referral plans for young clients requiring intensive interventions, ensuring a seamless transition to specialized care services.

4) Self-Harm and Safety Planning

  • Identify signs and risk factors of self-harm in children and adolescents, utilizing evidence-based assessment tools to determine the level of risk.
  • Acquire practical skills to develop and implement comprehensive safety plans tailored to the needs of young clients, effectively addressing and mitigating the risk of self-harm.

Session 2 (10/19; 10am – 1pm)

1) Ethics of AI and Technology

  • Learn to critically evaluate the ethical implications of using AI and emerging technologies in their practice, ensuring compliance with professional standards and safeguarding client privacy.
  • Acquire practical strategies to integrate AI and technological tools ethically, enhancing service delivery while maintaining transparency and accountability.

2) Ethics of Telehealth

  • Implement ethical guidelines and best practices in telehealth, ensuring the confidentiality, security, and privacy of client information during virtual sessions.

  • Navigate and address ethical dilemmas specific to telehealth, such as managing informed consent and ensuring equitable access to services for diverse populations.

3) Ethics of Social Media 

  • Learn to establish and maintain clear ethical boundaries on social media, ensuring professional conduct and the protection of client confidentiality.

  • Acquire strategies to effectively manage and mitigate ethical risks associated with social media use, including issues of privacy, dual relationships, and the dissemination of professional information.
