Description of the Course:

Why is understanding this topic important?

1. Prevalence and Vulnerability:

Youth are highly vulnerable to exploitation, and sex trafficking is a widespread issue affecting thousands of minors annually, making awareness and prevention efforts crucial to protect at-risk populations.

2. Long-lasting Trauma:

Victims of sex trafficking often experience severe, long-term physical, emotional, and psychological trauma, requiring specialized therapeutic interventions to support recovery and reintegration.

3. Legal and Societal Responsibility:

Addressing sex trafficking is not only a legal obligation but also a societal one, as preventing exploitation and supporting survivors contributes to creating a safer and more just society for all children.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify Key Indicators of Youth Sex Trafficking: Participants will be able to recognize common signs of youth being trafficked, such as scripted stories, lack of identification, and inappropriate clothing. This knowledge will help professionals intervene early and provide appropriate support.

  2. Apply Trauma-Informed Therapeutic Strategies: Learners will practice using therapeutic approaches, like cognitive behavioral therapy and somatic exercises, to help trafficked youth process their trauma. These methods aim to promote emotional healing and stability for victims.

  3. Develop a Holistic Care Plan for Trafficked Youth: Participants will create comprehensive care plans that address the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of trafficked youth, integrating services like medical care, therapy, and educational support. These plans will prioritize the well-being and recovery of survivors.

Target Audience:

Mental health professionals and Masters and Clinical level licensees pursuing continuing education.
