Alabama Counselor and Therapist Licensure Renewal Dates and CE Requirements -

Navigating licensure renewal as a counselor or therapist in Alabama is crucial to maintaining your professional standing. Whether you’re a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Associate Licensed Counselor (ALC), or a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), keeping track of renewal dates and fulfilling continuing education (CE) requirements is essential. Understanding these requirements ensures compliance and contributes to your professional growth and development within the field.

In Alabama, the licensure renewal process involves specific timelines and criteria, which differ slightly depending on your license type. Renewal dates typically follow a biennial cycle, meaning they occur every two years.

Counselors and therapists must be diligent in tracking these deadlines to avoid lapses in their licensure, which could disrupt their ability to practice. Moreover, the state requires a set number of continuing education hours, including mandated courses in ethics and other relevant topics to ensure that licensed professionals remain current in their knowledge and skills.

2) Alabama Counselor and Therapist Continuing Education Requirements

In Alabama, counselors and therapists, including Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Associate Licensed Counselors (ALCs), must fulfill specific Continuing Education (CE) requirements to maintain licensure.

These requirements ensure that professionals stay current in their practice, expand their skills, and adhere to ethical standards.

LPC Continuing Education Requirements:

Total CE Hours: LPCs are required to complete 40 hours of continuing education during each two-year renewal period.
Ethics Training: Out of the 40 hours, 6 hours must be in the area of ethics. This can include topics like professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical decision-making in counseling.
Approved CE Providers: Continuing education must be obtained through board-approved providers. These may include organizations like the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), accredited universities, and recognized professional associations. Agents of Change Continuing Education is NBCC-approved.
Documentation: While you are required to keep documentation of all CE activities for at least three years, submission of certificates is typically only necessary if selected for an audit.

ALC Continuing Education Requirements:

Total CE Hours: ALCs are required to complete 10 hours of continuing education annually.
Ethics Training: Out of these 10 hours, at least 2 hours must be in ethics. Ethics CE must cover core topics relevant to professional counseling ethics.
Documentation: Similar to LPCs, ALCs must maintain records of CE activities but generally only submit them for review during an audit.

Additional CE Guidelines:

Variety of Formats: CE can be completed through live seminars, workshops, webinars, and online courses, as long as they are offered by approved providers.
Carrying Over CE Hours: Alabama does not allow unused CE hours to carry over into the next renewal period. All required hours must be completed within the current cycle.
Audits: Counselors may be randomly selected for a CE audit, during which they must provide documentation of completed CE activities.

These CE requirements ensure that Alabama counselors and therapists remain up to date on the latest developments in counseling techniques, ethical practices, and professional standards.
