2) Wyoming Counselor and Therapist Continuing Education Requirements

Continuing education (CE) is a vital part of maintaining licensure for counselors and therapists in Wyoming, ensuring that professionals remain current in their knowledge, skills, and ethical standards.

The Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board sets specific CE requirements that must be met every two years for both Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT). Here’s a detailed overview of these requirements.

Continuing Education Requirements for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC)

To renew an LPC license in Wyoming, counselors must complete 45 hours of continuing education during each two-year renewal period. These hours must meet the following criteria:

Ethics Requirement: At least 3 of the 45 CE hours must be specifically focused on ethics in counseling practice. This ensures that LPCs are up to date on legal, moral, and ethical standards in the profession.
Approved Providers: CE courses must be offered by an approved provider or organization. Examples of approved providers include:
- National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)
- American Counseling Association (ACA)
- Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board-approved local, state, or national organizations that offer continuing education relevant to counseling.
Acceptable Topics: CE hours must cover topics relevant to the field of counseling, such as therapeutic techniques, counseling theories, mental health diagnosis, treatment planning, and client interaction skills.
Documentation: Counselors must keep records of their completed CE activities, including certificates of completion, for at least four years, in case of an audit by the licensing board.

Continuing Education Requirements for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT)

Similar to LPCs, LMFTs in Wyoming are required to complete 45 hours of continuing education within each two-year renewal cycle, with the following specifics:

Ethics Requirement: A minimum of 3 hours in ethics must be part of the required 45 hours, focusing on ethical practices related to marriage and family therapy.
Approved Providers: Continuing education for LMFTs must come from recognized providers such as:
- American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)
- NBCC-approved providers
- State or national organizations approved by the Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board.
Relevant Content: CE activities should cover topics such as family systems theory, marriage and family therapy techniques, and relationship counseling, in addition to other mental health treatment areas.
Documentation: LMFTs are responsible for keeping detailed records of their CE credits for at least four years, including course titles, dates, and proof of completion, to verify compliance if requested by the licensing board.

Additional Continuing Education Details

CE Carryover: Wyoming does not allow counselors or therapists to carry over excess CE hours from one renewal cycle to the next. All 45 hours must be completed within the designated two-year period.
Online CE: The state of Wyoming permits online or distance learning CE courses, provided they are offered by an approved provider and meet the content and ethical standards required by the licensing board.

By adhering to these CE requirements, both LPCs and LMFTs in Wyoming maintain their licenses and continue to offer high-quality mental health services while ensuring their practices align with current professional standards and regulations.
