Description of the Course:
Why is understanding this topic important?
1. Understanding Grief Beyond Loss:
Grief is not only as the loss of a person but also as experiencing significant life changes. Moving to a new country represents a major change, leading to feelings of grief due to the loss of familiar surroundings, culture, and social networks.
2. Embracing New Concepts: Rights and Liberties:
There is a broader spectrum of rights and freedoms experienced in diverse societies, focusing on personal expression and identity. There is an importance in respecting individual differences, including those related to LGBTQ+ rights and personal freedoms.
3. Building Cultural Diversity and Respect:
While many children come from regions with different cultural norms, it’s crucial to understand and respect the local customs and rights in their new environment. Simple analogies like differences in clothing and hair color can illustrate that these superficial variations do not define a person’s worth or character.
Learning Objectives:
Identify and articulate the concept of grief as it relates to significant life changes for migrant youth.
Demonstrate an understanding of how to approach conversations about liberties and rights in the United States when working with migrant youth.
Develop skills to use in sessions with clients, helping them compare and contrast cultural differences between their native countries and mainstream U.S. culture. Specific examples will highlight differences in social behaviors, values, and legal rights.
Target Audience:
Masters and Clinical level licensees pursuing continuing education.
Content Level:
Both beginning and intermediate-level content are included in this course.
