1) 2024 ASWB Exam Updates

Scheduling and Registration with PSI

Registrations for testing at PSI test centers are now being accepted. Candidates who register November 1, 2023 or later will test at a PSI test center beginning January 2, 2024. Test-takers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the PSI testing platform.

No testing appointments will be available between December 16 and December 31.

The exam questions and scoring will remain the same.

If you are already registered and are testing at a Pearson VUE test center, download the Exam Guidebook for 2023 for details. If you are testing at a PSI test center, download the Exam Guidebook for 2024.

If you are unable to test before your registration expiration date and your board approval allows it, you may request an extension.

The ASWB stated that they are “excited that this partnership (with PSI) will allow us to offer online testing later in 2024.” They’ve also stated that “We will notify all registered test-takers about online testing availability and technical requirements when this option becomes available.”

If you have questions about how this transition may affect your testing experience, contact the ASWB Candidate Services Center. Email your questions about approved nonstandard testing arrangements to [email protected].

Electronic Dictionaries

As part of ASWB’s test vendor transition, an electronic English PDF dictionary will be available without prior approval to all test-takers during their examination. This change will begin January 2, 2024. Beginning on that date, additional dictionaries, including bilingual word-to-word dictionaries, will no longer be available to candidates as part of English as a second language arrangements.

Candidates with an existing ESL approval that includes a dictionary and who register before November 1 may attempt to schedule a testing appointment with Pearson VUE before December 16, 2023. Those candidates will be able to use their current approved dictionary(ies). No testing appointments will be available between December 16 and December 31.

Candidates who register November 1, 2023 or later will test at a PSI test center beginning January 2, 2024. Test-takers will not be approved to use bilingual word-to-word dictionaries after December 16.

2) How to Register with PSI for ASWB Exam

ASWB Exam Prerequisites

Before you dive into the registration process, let’s go over the basics. You must meet certain requirements to be eligible to register for the ASWB exam. Here they are:

  1. Degree: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
  2. Professional Experience: Depending on the level of the exam, some amount of professional social work experience might be required. Make sure to double-check!
  3. Age: You must be at least 18 years of age.
  4. Legality: No past criminal convictions.

Step-by-Step Registration Guide

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to register for the ASWB Exam:

  1. Ensure your Eligibility: Before anything else, confirm you meet the eligibility criteria for the exam you’re eyeing. This information is available on the official ASWB website.
  2. Reach out to your Jurisdiction’s Social Work Board: The next step is to contact your jurisdiction’s social work regulatory board. You’ll need to apply for their approval to sit the exam. Find your state’s Social Work board here.
  3. Get your Authorization to Test (ATT): If your application is approved, you’ll receive an Authorization to Test (ATT).
  4. Pay your Exam Fee: With the ATT in hand, it’s time to shell out for the exam fee. You can pay online through the ASWB website.
  5. Schedule your Exam: Last but not least, choose a date and time slot for your exam via PSI’s (test administrator) scheduling service. You will have the best opportunity to schedule your preferred date if you schedule four to six weeks prior to your preferred date. This will help to ensure that you get the location, date, and time that you want and are able to take the exam within the time limits of your authorization. If you do not take your exam by the expiration date listed on your Authorization to Test email, you will forfeit your exam fee.
