Master Your Learning Style

It’s critical that you understand your learning style prior to beginning your ASWB studying journey.  By understanding how you learn most effectively, you’ll maximize your performance on the exam.  Additionally, this knowledge will help you keep your stress lower and you will have to study for fewer hours.

VARK Model

  • Visual
  • Audio
  • Reading/Writing
  • Kinesthetic

*You can also be a multimodal learner who learns best through multiple mediums.

Visual Learning

Visual learners would prefer information presented in a visual rather than in written form. These learners pay attention to colors, fonts, and graphics.

Ways to incorporate this into your studying:

  1. Color-coding information (highlighters, colored pens, drawing, making posters)
  2. Mapping out your thoughts using charts, graphs, and infographics
  3. Make your own PowerPoint/ slideshows in a visually pleasing way

Aural/Audio Learning

Aural/Audio learners prefer information that is spoken or heard. These learners pay attention to speaking and listening to words and concepts.

Ways to incorporate this into your studying:

  1. Listen to audio and podcasts! (The Agents of Change course has audio-only clips for all lessons)
  2. Repeat information out loud or explain it to others in your own words. Repeat important information out loud.
  3. Record yourself reading important test areas or areas of weakness. Listen to these recordings to help solidify the info. You can use the voice memos app on your phone.

Reading and Writing Learning

Reading and writing learners prefer to take in information through print.

Ways to incorporate this into your studying:

  1. Convert your “notes” by synthesizing the information into less
  2. Read books, notes, and supplemental readings on topics to get a deeper understanding.
  3. Write out important words again and again.
  4. Utilize flashcards to write down important recall information.
  5. Read your notes (silently) again and again.

Kinesthetic Learning

Kinesthetic learners prefer to learn when they can participate in activities or solve problems in a hands-on manner.

Ways to incorporate this into your studying:

  1. Role-play case vignettes
  2. Study groups will help you ask questions in real-time and connect with peers.
  3. MOVE! Study while listening to music or exercising.
  4. Utilize movement breaks – avoid sitting for too long.
  5. Create your own real-life examples for important exam topics (Example: Assigning the Erikson developmental stages to family members in that stage)
  6. You want to experience the exam – role play or stimulate testing day to help you create a positive testing day experience.

Solitary Learning

If you’re a solitary learner, you may find yourself wanting to be alone and manage your studying on your own.

If you concentrate best when alone and prefer individual assignments to group activities, you may be a solitary learner.

Social Learning

Social learners thrive when studying around people, working in groups, teams, or interacting with others.

You may do best by finding a study partner or forming a small study group.

Each person has a unique learning style. Use trial and error and be self-reflective of what is realistic for you and your learning needs.
