Are You Ready to Take your ASWB Social Work Licensing Exam?

Are You Ready to Take your ASWB Social Work Licensing Exam?

It’s a question many of our students often ask themselves (and even each other!):

Am I ready for my exam?

Recently, we’ve shared blog posts on How To Prepare For LMSW Or LCSW ASWB Exam Week and even a Pre-Test Checklist For BSW, LMSW, And LCSW ASWB Exams.

But, these posts are intended for students who are very close to their exam date.

This blog post will help individuals who are just starting their exam preparations or are considering how to get started.

Gather Your Materials and Build a Plan

As you begin the study process, you may feel confused — are you studying the right materials? Do you have all of the study resources you may need?

Would an exam-studying checklist help you?

To get ready for the ASWB exam, you should order or download the materials you need and, more importantly, the materials that match your learning style. For example, Agents of Change is purpose-built for visual and auditory learners and includes engaging videos and graphics designed to capture your attention as you learn key concepts.

Regardless of whether you are preparing to take your Bachelor ASWB exam, the Masters ASWB exam, or the Clinical ASWB exam, finding and obtaining the study materials and other helpful guides you need to succeed will make your study and exam process go more smoothly.

Agents of Change also includes a study plan with all of their packages that helps you see how much time you should be studying each day and each week, helping you can stay on track!

A Pre-Test Checklist May Help You Stay Focused

You may still be in school, preparing for graduation; or you may be working in a non-social work position. Between work and preparing for your exam, it can be difficult to find time to focus.

Having your pre-test checklist handy, with specific daily activities, will make your study time much more valuable and productive. It will help you increase your ASWB exam readiness significantly before your exam date.

Your Pre-Test Checklist

1. Review Videos and Test-Related Materials

Whether you use Agents of Change or another program, watch every course video and read all of the materials twice. As you read the written materials and watch the videos, take detailed notes and practice active reading strategies.

If you order your study materials through Agents of Change, you’ll have over 30 topics of content and hundreds of practice questions.

2. Participate in Study Groups and Focus on Topics Where You Need More Study Support

Participate actively in study groups for your exam level. Focus more heavily on the areas where you have detected weaknesses or have a lack of knowledge. Review these areas frequently until you are very comfortable with the information.

With Agents of Change, you’ll have access to 2 live study groups per month as well as more than 20 recorded study groups on a variety of exam topics.

3. Read and Review the Social Work Code of Ethics at Least Twice

The NASW Code of Ethics is one of the most important documents you need to know for the exam. It details the ethics that social workers should consider in situations they may encounter throughout their careers.

Reviewing this document a minimum of two times will allow you to remember each ethical area, not only for your exam — but also for your social work practice. Taking notes as you review the Code will also help you to internalize these values.

When you are actively practicing social work, you may also find it easier to fall back on the Code in different professional situations.

4. Supplement Your Study Materials with at Least One Other Resource

Use 1-2 additional study resources. At Agents of Change, we highly recommend taking the ASWB official practice test and, if more practice questions are desired, purchasing the Apgar Book.

While study materials from various sources may contain similar information, you may find that some areas are given more prominence — as an example, the Code of Ethics may be more highly emphasized than assessment methods, as an example.

This is why it is so vital to use different resources as you are studying.

5. Take a Mock Test at Least Once

By taking a mock test, you will be able to improve your ASWB exam readiness.  The Agents of Change program includes a full-length (150 question) exam and we recommend pairing this with the ASWB official practice test.

As you take either practice test, you may realize that you are not as strong or confident in specific areas of the ASWB exam.

Once you have highlighted these areas, study them again. Take notes so you retain the material you are studying.

Take a second mock test. Compare your second score with your first score. Has it improved or is it similar to your first score? If it hasn’t gone up, review those weak areas again, take notes and watch the related videos again.

While there is some repetition involved in this process, it will help you feel more confident on test day! Your career and ability to earn your social work license both depend on understanding the material in the real test.

If you want to pass your ASWB exam on the first try, use this checklist and give yourself a better chance of succeeding!
